The Peoria Unified School District will hold an election for 2 School Board seats on November 8, 2022. School Board members are selected “At Large,” meaning voters will be able to vote for 2 of the 3 candidates on the ballot. The candidates are Heather Rooks, Devon Updegraff-Day, and Melissa Ewing.

CANDIDATES

Heather Rooks is a registered Republican and has voted in Republican primary elections. Rooks has also received endorsements from Republican officials and groups.

 

Rooks wants the Peoria Unified School District focused on core academics. She also supports parental rights, curriculum transparency, and improvements to special education programs.

 

Rooks opposes divisive race-based curriculum in school as well as gender and sexuality conversations.

 

Rooks and Updegraff-Day support each other’s candidacy for the two At-Large School Board seats.

Heather Rooks is a mother of four and Co-Creator of West Valley Parents Uniting in Arizona.

Devon Updegraff-Day is a registered Republican and has voted in Republican primary elections. Updegraff-Day has also received endorsements from Republican officials and groups.

 

Updegraff-Day supports raising academic standards, rather than lowering them “in the name of equity.” She strongly opposes Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs stating they tend to be the avenue for activism to filter into classrooms. She also wants to reduce district spending.

 

Updegraff-Day and Rooks support each other’s candidacy for the two At-Large School Board seats.

Devon Updegraff-Day is a mother of three and the co-owner of a medical practice

Melissa Ewing has voted in Democratic primary elections. Ewing has also used her social media platforms to boost democratic candidates and causes.

 

Ewing opposed an Arizona bill that would have provided curriculum transparency to parents by requiring teachers to upload lessons online.

 

Ewing has been accused of sharing private student information about the children of her school board opponent.
